Calke Abbey, Derbyshire

A view of the kitchen garden, all the box hedging is to be replaced due to the ravages of box blight. As a short term measure they have constructed these wicker edges made from locally sourced split hazel.

A very neat fence, Martin...expertly built.
Martin from Stone: It must have taken some time to construct
> I really like the look of the fencing.
Martin from Stone: It makes a wonderful edge to the plot
Sorry about the old hedging... but this looks very nice and tidy.
Martin from Stone: Box hedging is such a tradition in England, still looking on the bright side there will be no back breaking clipping required in the summer.
Note the old boot scraper by the entrance.

This is very clever and I'm sure something that predated the use of box. It looks good
Martin from Stone: I agree , the estate presumably have a home source of all this hazel
Shame about the Box hedge but this is quite an interesying style of fencing.
Martin from Stone: Very time consuming to create
I have never heard of box blight. The replacement looks good though
Martin from Stone: It is everywhere, that and a defoliating caterpillar have rendered box almost useless in many areas
They made a very good job of it, Martin.
Martin from Stone: Not a job for just anyone
